To relieve strain on your eyes while watching television or playing games, you need a well-lit room or you need television lighting to backlight your display. Lightpack from Woodenshark has come up with a creative solution that will backlight your display using ambient lighting effects.
Lightpack is a completely open-source hardware addition for your television or monitor that improves the presence effect of the entertainment you are watching. Lightpack uses ten LED strips that fasten to the back edge of your display. Through a controller pack that connects to a Windows, Linux or OS X system, the Prismatik software matches the image with multiple independent RGB channels. The result is an ambient backlight on your television or display that not only makes viewing easier on the eyes, but also adds dynamic presence to the image being viewed.
The Woodenshark team has a Kickstarter page that is fully funded and they are building the Lightpack with two goals: To make this unit very affordable and to keep the hardware and software open-source in the truest definition of the term. If you are tech savvy, you can download the entire software suite and schematics from their Google Project Hosting page. If you just want one to enhance your viewing experiences, toss them just 50 bucks and wait for July for the fireworks!
